Cross-Border Travel with a Rental Car from Serbia

A road trip from Serbia to a neighbouring country can be possible, but it must be approved before departure. Permission for domestic driving does not automatically include crossing a border.

Send the complete route

Tell the rental company every country you will enter, including transit countries, plus the dates and expected return location. Documents and insurance can depend on the entire route—not only the final destination.

Confirm the documents

Ask which vehicle authorisation, registration, insurance proof or international insurance document is required. The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains that insurance-document requirements differ between countries and agreements. Use its official driver’s licence and insurance guidance, but follow the rental company’s written permission for the specific car.

Expect different rental conditions

Cross-border travel may change the deposit, mileage, insurance, assistance and price. Confirm who to contact after a breakdown or incident abroad and whether another driver is authorised.

Do not add countries during the trip without approval. An open border or visa-free entry does not change the rental contract.
